I love playing with ideas, be it through painting or making jewelry. Although I am a published writer, speaking without words is as much of a challenge, and part of the fun of “living in the land of make believe.”

Using both additive and reductive processes, ink is painted on a plate with either a roller, brushes, tissue paper, pencil, erasure, rag, or fingers. The process continues back and forth, until complete in plein-air, on site.

The plate is then laid on the press and paper is laid on it. Rolled through the press by hand, the ink is transferred to the paper by pushing the paper over the inked plate. The image is rolled through the press only once, making the print one of one.

I grew up and have lived most of my life in Floyd County, Virginia. I always enjoyed all kinds of crafts and only recently have I been involved with a multi-media production of a documentary highlighting the life of a local fiddle maker. I am currently writing a book which will include a family history of my ancestors dating back to the 1700s in the Blue Ridge Mountains, information on some of the local businesses where I grew up but which are now closed, and photos of family never published before.

I have a passion for photography, I love it! For me capturing that perfect shot is like a fisherman catching that big fish that he just has to hang on the wall or a hunter getting that 18 pointer. I don't get it...instead of killing the critters, I'd much rather take their picture.

Lora Mahaffey CackleAndHoot Mixed Media

I’m an artist, baker and collector of interesting junk and sparkly stuff that I take home, mess around with and turn into other stuff. I like to make tiny things just because they please me. I also make jewelry, draw and I love paper, polymer clay, paint and fussy details. Ornamenting objects is a wee obsession, as are books, typeface, the Dark Ages (not all that dark), the Renaissance, the Pre-Raphaelites, as well as lots of individual artists, both contemporary and long gone.
I live in the foothills of the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia, in a big old friendly house with a great husband and our two fuzzy monsters.

My style goes from abstract expressionism, to impressionism, even surrealist. My work at this period in my life is all about that pent up artistic expression. In addition to painting, I create flame-worked glass beads that I use to create jewelry and pottery pieces, both slab-worked and wheel thrown.
