Brushes don't make paintings and computers don't make art-Computers are easy. - Art is hard. Computers, acrylics, encaustics and collage fuse in my work. A reviewer has called it "mixed media on steroids. It is invigorating, flexible and lively!" My chief goal over the years has been to push the "new" computer medium to its expressive limit, while retaining the best of traditional studio media.

A great love for the Appalachians inspires the variety of subject material for my watercolor art. My concentration on painting spring houses, something that is quickly fading away, (typically located near a spring where cool water flowed through, these structures were used to house milk, eggs, butter, etc.) helps to preserve those things that will soon be gone. I have a studio in my home and in process of completing a gallery. I am also a watercolor art instructor.

I got hooked on glass as a medium three years ago after taking my first jewelry class. I love doing things that use a kiln, it is always like Christmas when you open them up. At least three layers of hand cut glass are carefully designed and placed in a kiln. It is then fired to 1500 degrees, slowly cooled to anneal properly, then reshaped if necessary and fire polished. I am finding glass a fascinating medium especially the dichroic, I always look for something new that someone will enjoy.

A love of woodworking that developed while I was teaching has evolved into a retirement occupation focused on turning ornaments, boxes, bowls, and platters. Learning the correct use of tools and determining the best sequence of steps to produce a completed box or bowl with beautiful grain displayed is a fascinating journey and I enjoy sharing the ride. I am a woodturning instructor at John C Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC. BCS is an RTM Trailsite.

All my life, I have had a need to create by sketching the small dramas being played out in nature. In painting the subjects that I am familiar with from growing up in the rural mountains of Southwest Virginia, I have diligently developed my own style which I feel is still evolving and growing. I feel that the past intermingles with the present and influences the future. The vignettes of everyday life are nostalgic reminders of where we came from and hints of where we are going.

Located at the cusp at the newly developed Salt Trail, Manaytique began as a small home based business for a retired couple. During the summer of 2007 their daughter, Sylvia came home for what was supposed to be a brief visit. Instead of teaching science, Sylvia, with the help of Fred Debusk transformed an abandoned building into a widely popular dining spot. We invite you to come in, enjoy coffee, indulge in some ice cream, and savor a hot Philly Cheese steak or our Popular BaconChicken Wrap.
