A great love for the Appalachians inspires the variety of subject material for my watercolor art. My concentration on painting spring houses, something that is quickly fading away, (typically located near a spring where cool water flowed through, these structures were used to house milk, eggs, butter, etc.) helps to preserve those things that will soon be gone. All my life, I have had a need to create by sketching the small dramas being played out in nature. In painting the subjects that I am familiar with from growing up in the rural mountains of Southwest Virginia, I have diligently developed my own style which I feel is still evolving and growing. I feel that the past intermingles with the present and influences the future. The vignettes of everyday life are nostalgic reminders of where we came from and hints of where we are going.

“Good pots are simple and direct and difficult to achieve. Volume, contour, color, texture, energy, line....all come into play in this humble format that gets set in the dishwasher and stacked in the cupboard.” For 30 years I have felt deeply at home in this rural landscape, raising my sons, and following my passion for a material I have loved since I was a child.
